Frances' work is inspired by plants in all of their forms, from the hairy opening bud of a poppy, to the perfect Fibonacci sequence that is an opened Dahlia. Through the study of the plant, maybe the flower or perhaps the seedcase, and see the patterns that have been formed during its growth. Frances builds forms using these patterns as guidance, playing with the scale, and the sculptures are often as large as she can build them, this means that the plant is then represented to us as an insect may see it.
Generally the work is built in the round, but in the last year or so Frances has had great fun working on framed wall pieces which gives her the freedom to work in a far more detailed and delicate manner as the work is supported during making and firing.
The work is made in fine white stoneware. The sculptures all start on the wheel and then modeled onto them. The colour and the glaze are painted on by hand.
Frances' work ranges from £295 to £12,000, other work available in the gallery
